Connecting the underground to the dance industry
The underground rap scene has a problem fans are starting to notice. Artists rarely get training in stage presence, and their videos and live shows almost never have movement direction in them. Broader audiences notice a thought-out performance even if they are unfamiliar with an artist’s music. Project Liaison is bridging the gap between the underground and the dance industry so artists can push their careers using avenues that aren’t strictly reliant on music production.
There’s a misunderstanding that a rapper has to learn the skills of a professional dancer to perform with dancers.
They don’t.
The traditional way, the one Michael Jackson and Chris Brown pioneered, is one way to use dance with an artist. It isn’t the only way.
Dancers can complement an artist at whatever level that artist performs. Even dancers engaging with the artist freely on stage while they entertain the crowd changes how a set lands.
What This Looks Like in Practice
The general process of bringing dancers into a production.
Music Videos
- A pre-production creative call where we align on the visual story before any choreography exists.
- The song delivered in advance so the choreography is built to the final mix.
- Choreography pre-built off-site before the artist ever steps in the room.
- One on one performance coaching for the artist that most teams skip and then regret.
- Group rehearsals that lock in spacing, formations, and how the artist moves through the dancers.
And more...
Live Performances
- A stage and set design meeting that decides whether the choreography survives soundcheck.
- A locked setlist that builds choreography around the song order instead of fighting it.
- One-on-one performance coaching that handles the thing most underground artists are losing at festivals right now.
- Dancer rehearsals run separately so the artist isn’t watching anyone learn.
- Full-cast rehearsals that turn dancers into spatial anchors instead of background.
